Thirty-six Psalms of King David that are especially revered for healing are below.
Following the 36 are stanzas from Psalm 119 that correspond to the letters of the ill individual’s name. Read those deeply, too.
Chapter 20
For the conductor, a song of David. May the Lord answer you on a day of distress; may the name of the God of Jacob fortify you. May He send your aid from His sanctuary, and may He support you from Zion. May He remember all your meal offerings and may He accept your fat burnt offerings forever. May He give you as your heart [desires], and may He fulfill all your counsel. Let us sing praises for your salvation, and let us assemble in the name of our God; may the Lord fulfill all your requests. Now I know that the Lord saved His anointed; He answered him from His holy heavens; with the mighty acts of salvation from His right hand. These trust in chariots and these in horses, but we-we mention the name of the Lord our God. They kneel and fall, but we rise and gain strength. O Lord, save [us]; may the King answer us on the day we call.
פרק כ

Chapter 6
To the conductor with melodies on the sheminith, a song of David. O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger, and do not chastise me in Your wrath. Be gracious to me, O Lord, because I languish; heal me, O Lord, because my bones are frightened. And my soul is very frightened, and You, O Lord, how long? Return, O Lord, rescue my soul; save me for the sake of Your loving-kindness. For there is no memory of You in death; in the grave, who will thank You? I am weary from my sighing; every night I sully my bed; I wet my couch with my tears. My eye is dimmed from anger; it has aged because of all my adversaries. Turn away from me, all you workers of iniquity, for the Lord has hearkened to the voice of my weeping. The Lord has hearkened to my supplication; the Lord has accepted my prayer. All my enemies shall be ashamed and very frightened; they shall return and be ashamed in a moment.
פרק ו

Chapter 9
To the conductor, to brighten the youth, a song of David. I will thank the Lord with all my heart; I will tell all Your wonders. I will rejoice and exult with You; I will sing praises to Your most high name. When my enemies draw backward, they stumble and are destroyed from before You. For You have performed my judgment and my cause; You sat on the throne, O Judge of righteousness. You rebuked nations, You destroyed a wicked man; You erased their name forever and ever. The enemy has been destroyed; swords exist forever, and You have uprooted the cities-their remembrance is lost. But the Lord shall sit forever; He has established His throne for judgment. But He judges the world with righteousness, kingdoms with equity. And the Lord shall be a fortress for the crushed, a fortress for times of distress. And those who know Your name shall trust in You, for You have not forsaken those who seek You, O Lord. Sing praises to the Lord, Who dwells in Zion; relate His deeds among the peoples. For He Who avenges blood remembers them; He has not forgotten the cry of the humble. Be gracious to me, O Lord, see my affliction from my enemies, You Who raise me up from the gates of death, in order that I tell all Your praises; in the gates of the daughter of Zion I will rejoice in Your salvation. Nations have sunk in the pit they have made; in this net that they have concealed, their foot has become trapped. The Lord is known for the judgment that He performed; with the act of His hand, the wicked man stumbles. Let us meditate over this forever. May the wicked return to the grave, all nations who forget God. For the needy shall not be forgotten forever, neither shall the hope of the poor be lost to eternity. Arise, O Lord; let man have no power. May the nations be judged for Your anger. O Lord, place mastery over them; let the nations know that they forever are mortal man.

Chapter 13
To the conductor, a song of David. How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long will I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart by day; how long will my enemy have the upper hand over me? Look and answer me, O Lord my God; enlighten my eyes lest I sleep the sleep of death. Lest my enemy say, “I have overwhelmed him”; my adversaries will rejoice when I totter. But I trusted in Your loving-kindness, my heart will rejoice in Your salvation; I will sing to the Lord for He has bestowed [it] upon me.
פרק יג

Chapter 16
A michtam of David; O God, guard me for I have taken refuge in You. You should say to the Lord, “You are my Master; my good is not incumbent upon You. For the holy ones who are in the earth, and the mighty ones in whom is all my delight. May the sorrows of those who hasten after another [deity] increase; I will not pour their libations of blood, nor will I take their names upon my lips. The Lord is my allotted portion and my cup; You guide my destiny. Portions have fallen to me in pleasant places; even the inheritance pleases me.” I will bless the Lord, Who counseled me; even at night my conscience instructs me. I have placed the Lord before me constantly; because [He is] at my right hand, I will not falter. Therefore, my heart rejoiced, and my soul was glad; even my flesh shall dwell in safety. For You shall not forsake my soul to the grave; You shall not allow Your pious one to see the pit. You shall let me know the way of life, the fullness of joys in Your presence. There is pleasantness in Your right hand forever.

Chapter 17
A prayer of David; Hearken, O Lord, to righteousness, listen to my cry, lend an ear to my prayer, [which is] without deceitful lips. May my judgment come forth from before You; may Your eyes see [my] upright acts. You have tried my heart; You have visited [upon me] at night. You have refined me and not found; If I think, let it not pass my mouth. As for man’s deeds, because of the word of Your lips, I kept [myself] from the ways of the profligate. To support my feet in Your paths, lest my feet falter. I called to You because You shall answer me, O God. Bend Your ear to me; hearken to my saying. Distinguish Your kind acts to save, with Your right hand, those who take refuge [in You] from those who rise up [against them]. Guard me as the apple of the eye; in the shadow of Your wings You shall hide me. Because of the wicked who have robbed me; my mortal enemies who encompass me. [With] their fat, they closed themselves up; their mouths spoke with haughtiness. [By] our footsteps they surround us now, they set their eyes roaming over the land. His likeness is like a lion, which yearns for prey, and as a young lion, which lurks in hidden places. Arise, O Lord, confront him; bring him down to his knees; rescue my soul from the wicked, Your sword. Of those who die by Your hand, O Lord, of those who die of old age, whose share is in life, and whose belly You will fill with Your hidden treasure, who have children in plenty and leave their abundance to their babes. I will see Your face with righteousness; I will be satisfied with Your image upon the awakening.

Chapter 18
For the conductor; of the servant of the Lord, of David, who spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day that the Lord saved him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said, “I love You, O Lord, my strength. O Lord, my rock and my fortress and my rescuer; my God, my rock, I will take refuge in Him; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my refuge. With praise I call to the Lord, and from my enemies I will be saved. Bands of death have encompassed me, and streams of scoundrels would affright me. Bands of the nether world have surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me. When I am in distress, I call upon the Lord; yes, I cry out to my God; out of His temple He hears my voice, and my cry comes before Him in His ears. The earth shook and quaked, the foundations of the mountains did tremble; and they were shaken when He was angered. Smoke went up in His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth did devour; coals flamed forth from Him. And He bent the heavens, and He came down, and thick darkness was under His feet. And He rode on a cherub and did fly; He swooped on the wings of the wind. He made darkness His hiding-place about Him as His booth; the darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies. From the brightness before Him, His thick cloud passed, hail and coals of fire. The Lord thundered from Heaven; and the Most High gave forth His voice with hail and coals of fire. And He sent out arrows and He scattered them; He shot lightning and He discomfited them. And the depths of the water appeared; the foundations of the world were laid bare by Your rebuke, O Lord, by the blast of the breath of Your nostrils. He sent forth from on high [and] He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my mighty enemy, and from those that hated me, for they were too powerful for me. They confronted me on the day of my calamity, but the Lord was a support to me. And He brought me forth into a wide space; He delivered me because He took delight in me. The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands He recompensed me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from [the commandments of] my God. For all His ordinances were before me; and His statutes I will not remove from myself. And I was single-hearted with Him, and I kept myself from my iniquity. And the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands before His eyes. With a kind one, You show Yourself kind, with a sincere man, You show Yourself sincere. With a pure one, You show Yourself pure, but with a crooked one, You deal crookedly. For You deliver a humble people, and You humble haughty eyes. For You light my lamp; the Lord, my God, does light my darkness. For by You I run upon a troop, and by my God I scale a wall. [He is] the God Whose way is perfect; the word of the Lord is refined; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. For who is God save the Lord? And who is a Rock, save our God? The God is He Who girds me with strength; and He makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like hinds, and sets me upon my high places. He trains my hands for war so that a copper bow is bent by my arms. You have given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has supported me, and You have treated me with great humility. You have enlarged my step[s] beneath me, and my ankles have not slipped. I have pursued my enemies and overtaken them, never turning back until they were consumed. I have crushed them so that they cannot rise; yea, they are fallen under my feet. For You have girded me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those that rose up against me. And of my enemies, You have given me the back of their necks; those that hate me, that I may cut them off. They pray but no one saves them; [even] to the Lord, but He answered them not. Then I ground them as dust before the wind; as the mud in the streets I did pour them. You allowed me to escape from the contenders of the people; You shall make me the head over nations; may a people that I do not know serve me. As soon as they hear they shall obey me; foreigners shall lie to me. Foreigners shall wither, and they shall fear their imprisonments. The Lord lives, and blessed be my Rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation. The God Who grants me vengeance and destroys peoples instead of me. Who delivers me from my enemies; even above those that rise against me You have lifted me; from the violent man You deliver me. Therefore, I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations, and to Your name I will sing praises. He gives great salvations to His king, and He performs kindness to His anointed; to David and to his seed forever.

Chapter 22
For the conductor, on the ayeleth hashachar, a song of David. My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? [You are] far from my salvation [and] from the words of my moaning. My God, I call out by day and You do not reply, and at night I do not keep silent. But You are holy; You await the praises of Israel. Our ancestors trusted in You; they trusted and You rescued them. They cried out to You and they escaped; they trusted in You and they were not shamed. But I am a worm and not a man; a reproach of man, despised by peoples. All who see me will mock me; they will open their lips, they will shake their head. One should cast his trust upon the Lord, and He will rescue him; He will save him because He delights in him. For You drew me from the womb; You made me secure on my mother’s breasts. Upon You, I was cast from birth; from my mother’s womb You are my God. Do not distance Yourself from me, for distress is near; for there is none to help. Great bulls have surrounded me; the mighty ones of Bashan encompassed me. They opened their mouth against me [like] a tearing, roaring lion. I was spilled like water, and all my bones were separated; my heart was like wax, melting within my innards. My strength became dried out like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaves to my palate; and You set me down in the dust of death. For dogs have surrounded me; a band of evildoers has encompassed me, like a lion, my hands and feet. I tell about all my bones. They look and gloat over me. They share my garments among themselves and cast lots for my raiment. But You, O Lord, do not distance Yourself; my strength, hasten to my assistance. Save my soul from the sword, my only one from the grip of the dog. Save me from the lion’s mouth, as from the horns of the wild oxen You answered me. I will tell Your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise You. You who fear the Lord, praise Him; all the seed of Jacob, honor Him, and fear Him, all the seed of Israel. For He has neither despised nor abhorred the cry of the poor, neither has He hidden His countenance from him; and when he cried out to Him, He hearkened. Because of You is my praise in the great congregation; I pay my vows in the presence of those who fear Him. The humble shall eat and be sated; they shall praise the Lord, those who seek Him; your hearts shall live forever. All the ends of the earth shall remember and return to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall prostrate themselves before You. For the kingship is the Lord’s, and He rules over the nations. They shall eat all the best of the earth and prostrate themselves; before Him shall all those who descend to the dust kneel, and He will not quicken his soul. The seed that worships Him; it shall be told to the generation concerning the Lord. They shall come and tell His righteousness to the newborn people, that which He has done.

Chapter 23
A song of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He causes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even when I walk in the valley of darkness, I will fear no evil for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff – they comfort me. You set a table before me in the presence of my adversaries; You anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. May only goodness and kindness pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for length of days.

Chapter 28
Of David. To You, O Lord, I call. My Rock, do not be deaf to me, lest You be silent to me, and I will be likened to those who descend into the Pit. Hearken to the voice of my supplications when I cry out to You, when I lift my hands towards Your Holy Sanctuary. Do not cause me to be drawn with the wicked or with those who work iniquity, who speak peace with their friends but evil is in their heart. Give them according to their deeds and according to the evil of their endeavors; according to the work of their hands give to them; return their recompense to them. For they do not understand the works of the Lord or the deeds of His hands. He shall break them down and not build them up. Blessed is the Lord, for He has heard the voice of my supplication. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him and I was helped; my heart rejoiced and I will thank Him with my song. The Lord is strength to them and He is the stronghold of the salvations of His anointed. Save Your people and bless Your inheritance, and tend them and elevate them forever.

Chapter 30
A psalm; a song of dedication of the House, of David. I will exalt You, O Lord, for You have raised me up, and You have not allowed my enemies to rejoice over me. O Lord, I have cried out to You, and You have healed me. O Lord, You have brought my soul from the grave; You have revived me from my descent into the Pit. Sing to the Lord, His pious ones, and give thanks to His holy name. For His wrath lasts but a moment; life results from His favor; in the evening, weeping may tarry, but in the morning there is joyful singing. And I said in my tranquility, “I will never falter.” O Lord, with Your will, You set up my mountain to be might, You hid Your countenance and I became frightened. To You, O Lord, I would call, and to the Lord I would supplicate. “What gain is there in my blood, in my descent to the grave? Will dust thank You; will it recite Your truth? Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me; O Lord, be my helper.” You have turned my lament into dancing for me; You loosened my sackcloth and girded me with joy. So that my soul will sing praises to You and not be silent. O Lord, my God, I will thank You forever.

Chapter 31
To the conductor, a song of David. I took refuge in You, O Lord; let me not be shamed forever; rescue me with Your righteousness. Incline Your ear to me, quickly rescue me; be a rock of strength to me, a stronghold to save me. For You are my Rock and my Stronghold, and for Your name’s sake, You shall lead me and guide me. You shall free me from this net which they have hidden for me, for You are my stronghold. In Your hand I entrust my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth. I hated those who await worthless vanities, but I hoped for the Lord. I will exult and rejoice in Your kindness, for You have seen my affliction; You have known the troubles of my soul. And you did not deliver me into the hands of an enemy; You have placed my feet in a broad place. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; my eye is dimmed from anger, my soul and my belly. For my life is spent in grief and my years in sighing; my strength has failed because of my iniquity, and my bones have decayed. From all my tormentors I have become a reproach-and very much so to my neighbors-and fright to my acquaintances; those who see me outside avoid me. I was forgotten like a dead person, out of mind; I was like a lost utensil. For I heard the gossip of many, terror from all sides when they take counsel together against me; they plotted to take my soul. But I trusted in You, O Lord; I said, “You are my God.” My times are in Your hands; rescue me from the hands of my enemies and from my pursuers. Cause Your countenance to shine upon Your servant; save me with Your kindness. O Lord, let me not be shamed because I called out to You; let the wicked be shamed, let them be silenced to the grave. Let lying lips become mute, those that speak against a righteous man falsely, with haughtiness and disdain. How great is Your goodness that You have laid away for those who fear You, that You have worked for those who take refuge in You, in the presence of the sons of men! You shall hide them in the secrecy of Your countenance, from bands of men; protect them in a shelter from the strife of tongues. Blessed is the Lord for He has been wondrously kind to me in a besieged city. But I said in my haste, “I have been cut off from before Your eyes,” but You heard the voice of my supplications when I cried out to You. Love the Lord, all His pious ones. The Lord guards those who believe [in Him] and He pays with a bowstring him who works with haughtiness. Strengthen yourselves, and He will give your heart courage, all who hope to the Lord.

Chapter 32
Of David, a maskil. Praiseworthy is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is concealed. Praiseworthy is the man to whom the Lord ascribes no iniquity and in whose spirit there is no guile. When I was silent, my bones decayed with my moaning all day long. For day and night Your hand is heavy upon me; my freshness was transformed as in the droughts of summer. I would inform You of my sin, and I did not conceal my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. For this let every pious man pray to You at the time that You are found, only about a flood of vast waters that should not reach him. You are a shelter for me, from an adversary You guard me; with songs of deliverance You encompass me. “I will enlighten you and instruct you which way to go; I will wink My eye to you.” Be not like a horse, like a mule that does not discern; whose mouth must be held with bit and bridle, so that when he is being groomed, he does not come near you. Many are the pains of the wicked, but as for him who trusts in the Lord- kindness will encompass him. Rejoice with the Lord and exult, You righteous, and cause all those of upright hearts to sing praises.

Chapter 33
Sing joyously to the Lord, you righteous ones; it is fitting for the upright to offer praise. Extol the Lord with a harp; sing to Him with a ten-stringed lyre. Sing to Him a new song; play well with sounds of jubilation. For the word of the Lord is just; all His deeds are done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the kindness of the Lord fills the earth. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their hosts. He gathers the waters of the sea like a mound; He places the deep waters in vaults. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world tremble before Him. For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it endured. The Lord has annulled the counsel of nations; He has foiled the schemes of peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the thoughts of His heart throughout all generations. Fortunate is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose as a heritage for Himself. The Lord looks down from heaven; He beholds all mankind. From His dwelling-place He looks intently upon all the inhabitants of the earth. It is He Who fashions the hearts of them all, Who perceives all their actions. The king is not saved by a great army, nor a warrior rescued by great might. The horse is a false guarantee for victory; with all its great strength it offers no escape. But the eye of the Lord is directed toward those who fear Him, toward those who hope for His kindness, to save their soul from death and to sustain them during famine. Our soul yearns for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, for we have put our trust in His Holy Name. May Your kindness, Lord, be upon us, as we have placed our hope in You.

Chapter 37
By David. Do not compete with the wicked; do not envy doers of injustice. For like grass, they will be swiftly cut down; like green vegetation, they will wither. Trust in the Lord and do good; then you will abide in the land and be nourished by faith. Delight in the Lord, and He will grant you the desires of your heart. Cast your needs upon the Lord; rely on Him, and He will take care. He will reveal your righteousness like the light, your justness like the high noon. Depend on the Lord and hope in Him. Compete not with the prosperous, with the man who invents evil schemes. Let go of anger, abandon rage; do not compete with those who intend only to harm. For the evildoers will be cut down; but those who hope in the Lord, they will inherit the earth. For soon the wicked one will not be; you will gaze at his place, and he will be gone. But the humble shall inherit the earth, and delight in abundant peace. The wicked one plots against the righteous, and gnashes his teeth at him. My Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day will come. The wicked have drawn a sword and bent their bow to fell the poor and destitute, to slaughter those of upright ways. But their sword shall enter their own hearts, and their bows shall break. Better the little of the righteous, than the abundant wealth of the wicked. For the strength of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord supports the righteous. The Lord appreciates the days of the innocent; their inheritance will last forever. They will not be shamed in times of calamity, and in days of famine they will be satisfied. For the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord are as fattened sheep: consumed, consumed in smoke. The wicked man borrows and does not repay; but the righteous man is gracious and gives. For those blessed by Him will inherit the earth, and those cursed by Him will be cut off. The steps of man are directed by God; He desires his way. When he totters, he shall not be thrown down, for the Lord supports his hand. I have been a youth, I have also aged; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his offspring begging bread. All day he is kind and lends; his offspring are a blessing. Turn away from evil and do good, and you will dwell in peace forever. For the Lord loves justice, He will not abandon His pious ones—they are protected forever; but the offspring of the wicked are cut off. The righteous shall inherit the earth and dwell upon it forever. The mouth of the righteous one utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. The Torah of his God is in his heart; his steps shall not falter. The wicked one watches for the righteous man, and seeks to kill him. But the Lord will not abandon him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. Hope in the Lord and keep His way; then He will raise you high to inherit the earth. When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it. I saw a powerful wicked man, well-rooted like a vibrant, native tree. Yet he vanished, behold he was gone; I searched for him, but he could not be found. Watch the innocent, and observe the upright, for the future of such a man is peace. But sinners shall be destroyed together; the future of the wicked is cut off. The deliverance of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in time of distress. The Lord helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they have put their trust in Him.

Chapter 38
A psalm by David, to remind. O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger, nor chastise me in Your wrath. For Your arrows have landed in me, Your hand descended upon me. There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your rage, no peace in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have flooded over my head; like a heavy load, they are too heavy for me. My wounds are rotted; they reek because of my foolishness. I am bent and extremely bowed; all day I go about in gloom. My sides are inflamed; there is no soundness in my flesh. I am weakened and extremely depressed; I howl from the moaning of my heart. My Lord, all that I desire is before You; my sighing is not hidden from You. My heart is engulfed, my strength has left me; the light of my eyes, they, too, are not with me. My friends and companions stand aloof from my affliction; my intimates stand afar. The seekers of my life have laid traps; those who seek my harm speak destructiveness; they utter deceits all day long. But I am like a deaf man, I do not hear; like a mute that does not open his mouth. I was like a man that does not perceive, and in whose mouth there are no rebuttals. Because for You, O Lord, I wait; You will answer, my Lord, my God. For I said, “Lest they rejoice over me; when my foot falters they will gloat over me.” For I am accustomed to limping, and my pain is constantly before me. For I admit my iniquity; I worry because of my sin. But my enemies abound with life; those who hate me without cause flourish. Those who repay evil for good resent me for my pursuit of good. Do not forsake me, O Lord; do not be distant from me, my God. Hurry to my aid, O my Lord, my Salvation.

Chapter 39
For the Conductor, for yedutun, a psalm by David. I said that I would guard my ways from sinning with my tongue; I would guard my mouth with a muzzle, even while the wicked one is before me. I became mute with stillness, I was silent even from the good, though my pain was crippling. My heart grew hot within me, a fire blazed in my utterance, as I spoke with my tongue. O Lord, let me know my end and what is the measure of my days, that I may know when I will cease. Behold, like handbreadths You set my days; my lifetime is as naught before You. But all is futility, all mankind’s existence. Selah. Only in darkness does man walk, seeking only futility; he amasses riches and knows not who will reap them. And now, what is my hope, my Lord? My longing is to You. Rescue me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of the degenerate. I am mute, I do not open my mouth, for You have caused my suffering. Remove Your affliction from me; I am devastated by the attack of Your hand. In reproach for sin You chastened man; like a moth, You wore away that which is precious to him. All mankind is nothing but futility, forever. Hear my prayer, O Lord, listen to my cry; do not be silent to my tears, for I am a stranger with You, a sojourner like all my forefathers. Chapter 41
For the Conductor, a psalm by David. Fortunate is he who is thoughtful of the poor, for the Lord will save him on the day of evil. The Lord will guard him and keep him alive; he will be praised throughout the land; You will not deliver him to the desires of his enemies. The Lord will support him on the bed of illness; You will turn him over in his bed all throughout his sickness. I said, “Lord, be gracious to me! Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You!” My foes say that evil awaits me: “When will he die, and his name perish?” And if one comes to see me, he speaks insincerely, for his heart gathers iniquity for himself, and when he goes out he speaks of it. Together they whisper against me—all my enemies; against me they devise my harm, saying: “Let his wickedness pour into him; now that he lies down, he shall rise no more.” Even my ally in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has raised his heel over me. But you, Lord, be gracious to me and raise me up, and I will repay them. With this I shall know that You desire me, when my enemies will not shout gleefully over me. And I, because of my integrity, You upheld me; You set me before You forever. Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, to all eternity, Amen and Amen.

Chapter 49
For the Conductor, by the sons of Korach, a psalm. Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all you inhabitants of the world; sons of common folk and sons of nobility, rich and poor alike. My mouth speaks wisdom, and the thoughts of my heart are understanding. I incline my ear to the parable; I will unravel my riddle upon the harp. Why am I afraid in times of trouble? [Because] the sins I trod upon surround me. There are those who rely on their wealth, who boast of their great riches. Yet a man cannot redeem his brother, nor pay his ransom to God. The redemption of their soul is too costly, and forever unattainable. Can one live forever, never to see the grave? Though he sees that wise men die, that the fool and the senseless both perish, leaving their wealth to others—[nevertheless,] in their inner thoughts their houses will last forever, their dwellings for generation after generation; they have proclaimed their names throughout the lands. But man will not repose in glory; he is likened to the silenced animals. This is their way—their folly remains with them, and their descendants approve of their talk, Selah. Like sheep, they are destined for the grave; death shall be their shepherd, and the upright will dominate them at morning; their form will rot in the grave, away from its abode. But God will redeem my soul from the hands of the grave, for He will take me, Selah. Do not fear when a man grows rich, when the glory of his house is increased; for when he dies he will take nothing, his glory will not descend after him. For he [alone] praises himself in his lifetime; but [all] will praise you if you better yourself. He will come to the generation of his forefathers; they shall not see light for all eternity. Man [can live] in glory but does not understand; he is likened to the silenced animals.

Chapter 55
For the Conductor, with instrumental music, a maskil by David. Listen to my prayer, O God, do not hide from my pleas. Pay heed to me and answer me, as I lament in my distress and moan—because of the shout of the enemy and the oppression of the wicked; for they accuse me of evil and hate me passionately. My heart shudders within me, and the terrors of death have descended upon me. Fear and trembling penetrate me, and I am enveloped with horror. And I said, “If only I had wings like the dove! I would fly off and find rest. Behold, I would wander afar, and lodge in the wilderness forever. I would hurry to find shelter for myself from the stormy wind, from the tempest.” Consume, O Lord, confuse their tongue; for I have seen violence and strife in the city. Day and night they encircle her upon her walls, and iniquity and vice are in her midst. Treachery is within her; fraud and deceit never depart from her square. For it is not the enemy who taunts me—that I could bear; nor my foe who raises himself against me, that I could hide from him. But it is you, a man of my equal, my guide and my intimate. Together we took sweet counsel; we walked with the throng to the house of God. May He incite death upon them, let them descend to the pit alive; for there is evil in their dwelling, within them. As for me, I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening, morning and noon, I lament and moan—and He hears my voice. He redeemed my soul in peace from battles against me, because of the many who were with me. May God—He who is enthroned from the days of old, Selah—hear and humble those in whom there is no change, and who do not fear God. He extended his hands against his allies, he profaned his covenant. Smoother than butter are the words of his mouth, but war is in his heart; his words are softer than oil, yet they are curses. Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous man falter. And You, O God, will bring them down to the nethermost pit; bloodthirsty and treacherous men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in You.

Chapter 56
For the Conductor, of the mute dove far away. By David, a michtam, when the Philistines seized him in Gath. Favor me, O God, for man longs to swallow me; the warrior oppresses me every day. My watchful enemies long to swallow me every day, for many battle me, O Most High! On the day I am afraid, I trust in You. I trust in God and praise His word; in God I trust, I do not fear—what can a man of flesh do to me? Every day they make my words sorrowful; all their thoughts about me are for evil. They gather and hide, they watch my steps, when they hope to capture my soul. Should escape be theirs in reward for their iniquity? Cast down the nations in anger, O God! You have counted my wanderings; place my tears in Your flask—are they not in Your record? When my enemies will retreat on the day I cry out, with this I will know that God is with me. When God deals strictly, I praise His word; when the Lord deals mercifully, I praise His word. In God I trust, I do not fear—what can man do to me? My vows to You are upon me, O God; I will repay with thanksgiving offerings to You. For You saved my soul from death—even my feet from stumbling—to walk before God in the light of life.

Chapter 69
For the conductor, on shoshannim, of David. Save me, O God, for water has come up to my soul. I have sunk in muddy depths and there is no place to stand; I have come into the deep water, and the current has swept me away. I have become weary from calling out; my throat has become parched; my eyes fail while I wait for my God. Those who hate me for nothing are more numerous than the hairs of my head; mighty are those who would cut me off, who are my enemies because of lies; what I did not steal, I will then return. O God, You know my folly, and my acts of guilt are not concealed from You. Do not let those who hope for You be shamed through me, O Lord God of Hosts; let those who seek You not be disgraced through me, O God of Israel. For I have borne humiliation because of You; disgrace has covered my face. I was strange to my brothers, and alien to the sons of my mother. For the envy of Your house has consumed me, and the humiliations of those who blaspheme You have fallen upon me. I bewailed my soul in fast, and it was a disgrace for me. I made sackcloth my raiment, and I became a byword to them. They talk about me, those who sit in the gate, and they make melodies about me for those who imbibe strong drink. But, as for me, may my prayer to You, O Lord, be in an acceptable time. O God, with Your abundant kindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation. Save me from mud that I not sink, that I be saved from my enemies and from the depths of water. Let neither the current of water sweep me away, nor the deep swallow me, and let a well not close its mouth over me. Answer me, O Lord, for Your kindness is good; according to Your abundant mercies, turn to me. Do not hide Your face from Your servant, because I am distressed, hasten to answer me. Come close to my soul, redeem it; because of my enemies, redeem me. You know my humiliation, my shame, and my disgrace; all my oppressors are before You. Humiliation has broken my heart and I have become ill; I hoped for sympathy but there was none, and for comforters but I found none. They put gall into my food and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. May their table before them become a trap, and their hope for peace become a snare. May their eyes become dark, so they cannot see; constantly cause their loins to slip. Pour out Your fury upon them, and may Your burning wrath overtake them. May their palace be desolate; in their tents let there be no dweller. For You-those whom You smote they pursued, and about the pain of those whom You wounded they tell. Add iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not come into Your charity. May they be erased from the book of life, and may they not be inscribed with the righteous. But I am poor and in pain; may Your salvation, O God, exalt me. I shall praise the name of God with song, and I shall magnify Him with a thanksgiving offering. It will appeal to the Lord more than a young bull that is mature, with horns and hooves. When the humble see, they rejoice, yea, those who seek God, and your heart will be invigorated. For God hearkens to the needy, and He does not despise His prisoners. Heaven and earth will praise Him, the seas and everything that moves therein. When God saves Zion and builds the cities of Judah, they will dwell there and take possession of it. The seed of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will dwell therein.

Chapter 86
A prayer by David. Lord, turn Your ear, answer me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my soul, for I am pious; You, my God, deliver Your servant who trusts in You. Be gracious to me, my Lord, for to You I call all day. Bring joy to the soul of Your servant, for to You, my Lord, I lift my soul. For You, my Lord, are good and forgiving, and exceedingly kind to all who call upon You. Lord, hear my prayer and listen to the voice of my supplications. On the day of my distress I call upon You, for You will answer me. There is none like You among the supernal beings, my Lord, and there are no deeds like Yours. All the nations that You have made will come and bow down before You, my Lord, and give honor to Your Name, for You are great and perform wonders, You alone, O God. Lord, teach me Your way that I may walk in Your truth; unify my heart to fear Your Name. I will praise You, my Lord, my God, with all my heart, and give honor to Your Name forever. For Your kindness to me has been great; You have saved my soul from the depth of the grave. O God, malicious men have risen against me; a band of ruthless men has sought my soul; they are not mindful of You. But You, my Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in kindness and truth. Turn to me and be gracious to me; grant Your strength to Your servant, and deliver the son of Your maidservant. Show me a sign of favor, that my foes may see and be shamed, because You, Lord, have given me aid and consoled me.

Chapter 88
A song, a psalm by the sons of Korach, for the Conductor, upon the machalat le’anot; a maskil for Heiman the Ezrachite. O Lord, God of my deliverance, by day I cried out [to You], by night I [offer my prayer] before You. Let my prayer come before You; turn Your ear to my supplication. For my soul is sated with affliction, and my life has reached the grave. I was reckoned with those who go down to the pit, I was like a man without strength. [I am regarded] among the dead who are free, like corpses lying in the grave, of whom You are not yet mindful, who are yet cut off by Your hand. You have put me into the lowest pit, into the darkest places, into the depths. Your wrath has weighed heavily upon me, and all the waves [of Your fury] have constantly afflicted me. You have estranged my friends from me, You have made me abhorrent to them; I am imprisoned and unable to leave. My eye is afflicted because of distress; I call to You, O Lord, every day; I have stretched out my hands [in prayer] to You. Do You perform wonders for the deceased? Do the dead stand to offer You praise? Selah. Is Your kindness recounted in the grave, your faithfulness in the place of perdition? Are Your wondrous deeds known in the darkness [of the grave], or Your righteousness in the land of oblivion? But, I, to You, O Lord, I cry; each morning my prayer comes before You. Why, O Lord, do You forsake my soul? Why do You conceal Your countenance from me? From my youth I have been afflicted and approaching death, yet I have borne the fear of You which is firmly established within me. Your furies have passed over me; Your terrors have cut me down. They have engulfed me like water all day long, they all together surrounded me. You have estranged from me beloved and friend; I have been rejected by my intimates.

Chapter 89
A maskil by Eitan the Ezrachite. I will sing of the Lord’s kindness forever; to all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth. For I have said, “The world is built with kindness; there in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.” I have made a covenant with My chosen one; I have sworn to David, My servant: “I will establish Your descendants forever; I will build your throne for all generations,” Selah. Then the heavens will extol Your wonders, O Lord; Your faithfulness, too, in the congregation of the holy ones. Indeed, who in heaven can be compared to the Lord, who among the supernal beings can be likened to the Lord! The Almighty is revered in the great assembly of the holy ones, awe-inspiring to all who surround Him. O Lord, God of Hosts, who is mighty like You, O God! Your faithfulness surrounds You. You rule the vastness of the sea; when its waves surge, You still them. You crushed Rahav like a corpse; with Your powerful arm You scattered Your enemies. Yours are the heavens, the earth is also Yours; the world and all therein—You established them. The north and the south—You created them; Tabor and Hermon sing of [the greatness] of Your Name. Yours is the arm which has the might; strengthen Your hand, raise high Your right hand. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; kindness and truth go before Your countenance. Fortunate is the people who know the sound of the shofar; Lord, they walk in the light of Your countenance. They rejoice in Your Name all day, and they are exalted through Your righteousness. Indeed, You are the splendor of their might, and in Your goodwill our glory is exalted. For our protectors turn to the Lord, and our king to the Holy One of Israel. Then You spoke in a vision to Your pious ones and said: “I have granted aid to [David] the mighty one; I have exalted the one chosen from among the people. I have found David, My servant; I have anointed him with My holy oil. It is he whom My hand shall be prepared [to assist]; My arm, too, shall strengthen him. The enemy shall not prevail over him, nor shall the iniquitous person afflict him. And I will crush his adversaries before him, and will strike down those who hate him. Indeed, My faithfulness and My kindness shall be with him, and through My Name his glory shall be exalted. I will set his hand upon the sea, his right hand upon the rivers. He will call out to Me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the strength of my deliverance.’ I will also make him [My] firstborn, supreme over the kings of the earth. I will maintain My kindness for him forever; My covenant shall remain true to him. And I will bestow [kingship] upon his seed forever, and his throne will endure as long as the heavens last. If his children forsake My Torah and do not walk in My ordinances; if they profane My statutes and do not observe My commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their misdeeds with plagues. Yet I shall not take away My kindness from him, nor betray My faithfulness. I will not abrogate My covenant, nor change that which has issued from My lips. One thing I have sworn by My holiness—I will not cause disappointment to David. His seed will endure forever and his throne will be [resplendent] as the sun before Me. Like the moon, it shall be established forever; [the moon] is a faithful witness in the sky for all time.” Yet You have forsaken and abhorred; You became enraged at Your anointed. You annulled the covenant with Your servant; You have profaned his crown [by casting it] to the ground. You shattered all his fences; You turned his strongholds into ruins. All wayfarers despoiled him; he has become a disgrace to his neighbors. You have uplifted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice. You also turned back the blade of his sword, and did not sustain him in battle. You put an end to his splendor, and toppled his throne to the ground. You have cut short the days of his youth; You have enclothed him with long-lasting shame. How long, O Lord, will You conceal Yourself—forever? [How long] will Your fury blaze like fire? O remember how short is my life span! Why have You created all children of man for naught? What man can live and not see death, can save his soul forever from the grave? Where are Your former deeds of kindness, my Lord, which You swore to David in Your faithfulness? Remember, my Lord, the disgrace of Your servants, that I bear in my bosom from all the many nations; that Your enemies have disgraced, O Lord, that they have disgraced the footsteps of Your anointed. Blessed is the Lord forever, Amen and Amen.

Chapter 90
A prayer by Moses, the man of God. My Lord, You have been a shelter for us in every generation. Before the mountains came into being, before You created the earth and the world—for ever and ever You are Almighty God. You diminish man until he is crushed, and You say, “Return, you children of man.” Indeed, a thousand years are in Your eyes like yesterday that has passed, like a watch of the night. The stream of their life is as but a slumber; in the morning they are like grass that sprouts anew. In the morning it thrives and sprouts anew; in the evening it withers and dries. For we are consumed by Your anger, and destroyed by Your wrath. You have set our wrongdoings before You, our hidden sins before the light of Your countenance. For all our days have vanished in Your wrath; we cause our years to pass like a fleeting sound. The days of our lives number seventy years, and if in great vigor, eighty years; most of them are but travail and futility, passing quickly and flying away. Who can know the intensity of Your anger? Your wrath is commensurate with one’s fear of You. Teach us, then, to reckon our days, that we may acquire a wise heart. Relent, O Lord; how long [will Your anger last]? Have compassion upon Your servants. Satiate us in the morning with Your kindness, then we shall sing and rejoice throughout our days. Give us joy corresponding to the days You afflicted us, the years we have seen adversity. Let Your work be revealed to Your servants, and Your splendor be upon their children. May the pleasantness of the Lord our God be upon us; establish for us the work of our hands; establish the work of our hands.

Chapter 91
You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Omnipotent: I say of the Lord who is my refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I trust, that He will save you from the ensnaring trap, from the destructive pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, and you will find refuge under His wings; His truth is a shield and an armor. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; the pestilence that prowls in the darkness, nor the destruction that ravages at noon. A thousand may fall at your [left] side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not reach you. You need only look with your eyes, and you will see the retribution of the wicked. Because you [have said], “The Lord is my shelter,” and you have made the Most High your haven, no evil will befall you, no plague will come near your tent. For He will instruct His angels in your behalf, to guard you in all your ways. They will carry you in their hands, lest you injure your foot upon a rock. You will tread upon the lion and the viper; you will trample upon the young lion and the serpent. Because he desires Me, I will deliver him; I will fortify him, for he knows My Name. When he calls on Me, I will answer him; I am with him in distress. I will deliver him and honor him. I will satiate him with long life, and show him My deliverance.

Chapter 102
A prayer of the poor man when he is faint and pours out his tale of woe before the Lord. O Lord, hear my prayer, let my cry reach You! Hide not Your face from me on the day of my distress; turn Your ear to me; on the day that I call, answer me quickly. For my days have vanished with smoke; my bones are dried up like a hearth. Smitten like grass and withered is my heart, for I have forgotten to eat my bread. From the voice of my sighing, my bone clings to my flesh. I am like a bird of the wilderness; I have become like an owl of the waste places. I lie awake, and am like a sparrow alone on the housetop. All day my enemies reproach me; those who deride me use my name as a curse. For I have eaten ashes like bread and mingled my drink with weeping, because of Your indignation and Your wrath; for You have lifted me up and cast me away. My days are like a shadow that lengthens, and I wither away like grass. But You, O Lord, shall endure forever, and the remembrance of Your name to all generations. You will arise and have mercy on Zion; for the time to favor her, yes, the set time, has come. For Your servants take pleasure in her stones and show favor to her dust. So the nations shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth Your glory. For the Lord shall build up Zion; He shall appear in His glory. He will regard the prayer of the destitute and not despise their prayer. This will be written for the generation to come, that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord. For He looked down from the height of His sanctuary; from heaven the Lord viewed the earth, to hear the groaning of the prisoner, to release those appointed to death, to declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and His praise in Jerusalem, when the peoples are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord. He weakened my strength in the way; He shortened my days. I said, “O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days; Your years are throughout all generations. Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You will endure; yes, all of them will grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will have no end. The children of Your servants will continue, and their descendants will be established before You.

Chapter 103
By David. Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all my being, His holy Name. My soul, bless the Lord; forget not all His favors: Who forgives all your sins, Who heals all your illnesses; Who redeems your life from the grave, Who crowns you with kindness and mercy; Who satisfies your mouth with goodness; like the eagle, your youth is renewed. The Lord executes righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made His ways known to Moses, His deeds to the Children of Israel. The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and of great kindness. He will not contend for eternity, nor harbor ill will forever. He has not dealt with us according to our transgressions, nor requited us according to our sins. For as high as heaven is above the earth, so has His kindness been mighty over those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so has He distanced our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so has the Lord had compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows our nature; He is mindful that we are but dust. As for man, his days are like grass; like a flower of the field, so he sprouts. When a wind passes over him, he is gone; his place recognizes him no more. But the kindness of the Lord is forever and ever upon those who fear Him, and His righteousness is [secured] for children’s children, to those who keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commands to do them. The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingship has dominion over all. Bless the Lord, you His angels who are mighty in strength, who do His bidding to obey the voice of His speech. Bless the Lord, all His hosts, His servants who do His will. Bless the Lord, all His works, in all the places of His dominion. My soul, bless the Lord!

Chapter 104
My soul, bless the Lord! Lord my God, You are greatly exalted; You have garbed Yourself with majesty and splendor. You enwrap Yourself with light as with a garment; You spread out the heavens like a curtain. You lay the beams of Your upper chambers in the waters; You make the clouds Your chariot; You walk on the wings of the wind. You make Your angels spirits, Your ministers a flaming fire. You established the earth upon its foundations, so that it shall not be moved forever and ever. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At Your rebuke they fled; at the voice of Your thunder they hastened away. They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys to the place which You have founded for them. You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, that they may not return to cover the earth. He sends the springs into the valleys; they flow among the hills. They give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. By them, the birds of the heavens have their home; they sing among the branches. He waters the hills from His upper chambers; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of Your works. He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the service of man, that he may bring forth food from the earth, and wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread which strengthens man’s heart. The trees of the Lord are full of sap, the cedars of Lebanon which He planted, where the birds make their nests; the stork has her home in the fir trees. The high hills are for the wild goats; the cliffs are a refuge for the rock badgers. He appointed the moon for seasons; the sun knows its going down. You make darkness, and it is night, in which all the beasts of the forest creep about. The young lions roar after their prey and seek their food from God. When the sun arises, they gather together and lie down in their dens. Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening. O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom, You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions— this great and wide sea, in which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great. There the ships sail about; there is that Leviathan which You have made to play there. These all wait for You, that You may give them their food in due season. What You give them, they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good. You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works. He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the Lord. May sinners be consumed from the earth, and the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord!

Chapter 107
Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His kindness is everlasting. So shall say those redeemed by the Lord, those whom He redeemed from the hand of the oppressor. He gathered them from the lands—from east and from west, from north and from the sea. They lost their way in the wilderness, in the wasteland; they found no inhabited city. Both hungry and thirsty, their soul languished within them. They cried out to the Lord in their distress; He delivered them from their afflictions. He guided them in the right path to reach an inhabited city. Let them give thanks to the Lord, and [proclaim] His wonders to the children of man, for He has satiated a thirsting soul, and filled a hungry soul with goodness. Those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, bound in misery and chains of iron, for they defied the words of God and spurned the counsel of the Most High—He humbled their heart through suffering; they stumbled and there was none to help. They cried out to the Lord in their distress; He saved them from their afflictions. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and sundered their bonds. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His kindness, and [proclaim] His wonders to the children of man, for He broke the brass gates and smashed the iron bars. Foolish sinners are afflicted because of their sinful ways and their wrongdoings. Their soul loathes all food, and they reach the gates of death. They cried out to the Lord in their distress; He saved them from their afflictions. He sent forth His command and healed them; He delivered them from their graves. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His kindness, and [proclaim] His wonders to the children of man. Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and joyfully recount His deeds. Those who go down to the sea in ships, who perform tasks in mighty waters; they saw the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep. He spoke and caused the stormy wind to rise, and it lifted up the waves. They rise to the sky, plunge to the depths; their soul melts in distress. They reel and stagger like a drunkard, all their skill is to no avail. They cried out to the Lord in their distress, and He brought them out from their calamity. He transformed the storm into stillness, and the waves were quieted. They rejoiced when they were silenced, and He led them to their destination. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His kindness, and [proclaim] His wonders to the children of man. Let them exalt Him in the congregation of the people, and praise Him in the assembly of the elders. He turns rivers into desert, springs of water into parched land, a fruitful land into a salt-marsh, because of the wickedness of those who inhabit it. He turns a desert into a lake, and parched land into springs of water. He settles the hungry there, and they establish a city of habitation. They sow fields and plant vineyards which yield fruit and wheat. He blesses them and they multiply greatly, and He does not decrease their cattle. [If they sin,] they are diminished and cast down through oppression, misery, and sorrow. He pours contempt upon distinguished men, and causes them to stray in a pathless wilderness. He raises the needy from distress, and makes their families [as numerous] as flocks. The upright observe this and rejoice, and all the wicked close their mouth. Let him who is wise bear these in mind, and then the benevolent acts of the Lord will be understood.

Chapter 116
I would love if the Lord would listen to my voice, to my supplications; if He would turn His ear to me on the days when I call. The pangs of death encompassed me and the misery of the grave came upon me; I encounter trouble and sorrow. I invoke the Name of the Lord, “Lord, I implore you, deliver my soul!” The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is compassionate. The Lord watches over the simpletons; I was brought low, and He saved me. Return, my soul, to your tranquility, for the Lord has bestowed goodness upon you. For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. I shall walk before the Lord in the lands of the living. I had faith even when I declared, “I am greatly afflicted”; [even when] I said in my haste, “All men are deceitful.” How can I repay the Lord for all His beneficences to me? I will raise the cup of deliverance and proclaim the Name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people. Grievous in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His pious ones. I thank you, Lord, that since I am Your servant, I am Your servant the son of Your maidservant, You have loosened my bonds. To You I will bring an offering of thanksgiving, and proclaim the Name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people, in the courtyards of the House of the Lord, in the midst of Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!

Chapter 118
Offer praise to the Lord for He is good, for His kindness is everlasting. Let Israel declare that His kindness is everlasting. Let the House of Aaron declare that His kindness is everlasting. Let those who fear the Lord declare that His kindness is everlasting. From out of distress I called to God; with abounding relief, God answered me. The Lord is with me, I do not fear-what can man do to me? The Lord is with me among my helpers, and I will see [the downfall of] my enemies. It is better to rely on the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to rely on the Lord than to trust in nobles. All the nations surrounded me, but in the Name of the Lord I will cut them down. They surrounded me, they encompassed me, but in the Name of the Lord I will cut them down. They surrounded me like bees, yet they shall be extinguished like fiery thorns; in the Name of the Lord I will cut them down. You [my foes] repeatedly pushed me to fall, but the Lord helped me. God is my strength and song, and He has been a help to me. The sound of rejoicing and deliverance reverberates in the tents of the righteous, “The right hand of the Lord performs deeds of valor. The right hand of the Lord is exalted; the right hand of the Lord performs deeds of valor!” I shall not die, but I shall live and recount the deeds of God. God has indeed chastised me, but He did not give me up to death. Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them and praise God. This is the gate of the Lord, the righteous will enter it. I offer thanks to You, for You have answered me, and You have been my deliverance. The stone which the builders scorned has become the chief cornerstone. From the Lord has this come about; it is wondrous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice on it. We implore You, Lord, deliver us. We implore You, Lord, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord; we bless you from the House of the Lord. The Lord is a benevolent God and He has given us light; bind the festival offering with cords until [you bring it to] the horns of the altar. You are my God and I will praise You, my God-and I will exalt You. Praise the Lord for He is good, for His kindness is everlasting.

Chapter 142
A maskil by David, when he was in the cave, a prayer. With my voice I will cry out to the Lord; with my voice I will call to the Lord in supplication. I will pour out my plea before Him; I will declare my distress in His presence. When my spirit is faint within me, You know my path. In the way in which I walk, they have hidden a snare for me. Look to my right and see, there is none that will know me; every escape is lost to me. No man cares for my soul. I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” Listen to my song of prayer, for I have been brought very low. Deliver me from my pursuers, for they are too mighty for me. Release my soul from confinement, so that it may acknowledge Your Name. Because of me, the righteous will crown [You] when You will deal graciously with me.

Chapter 143
A psalm by David. O Lord, hear my prayer, lend Your ear to my supplications. With Your faithfulness answer me, and with Your righteousness. Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, for no living being would be vindicated before You. For the enemy has pursued my soul; he has crushed my life to the ground; he has set me down in dark places, like those who are eternally dead. Then my spirit became faint within me; my heart was dismayed within me. I remembered the days of old; I meditated on all Your deeds; I spoke of Your handiwork. I spread out my hands to You; like a languishing land my soul yearns after You, Selah. Answer me soon, O Lord, my spirit is spent; hide not Your face from me, lest I become like those who descend into the pit. Let me hear Your kindness in the morning, for have I trusted in You. Let me know the way in which I should walk, for to You I have lifted my soul. Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord. I have concealed [my troubles from all, save] You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God. Let Your good spirit lead me in an even path. For the sake of Your Name, O Lord, give me life; in Your righteousness, take my soul out of distress. And in Your kindness, cut off my enemies and obliterate all those who oppress my soul, for I am Your servant.

Chapter 148
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the celestial heights. Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His hosts. Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all the shining stars. Praise Him, heaven of heavens, and the waters that are above the heavens. Let them praise the Name of the Lord, for He commanded and they were created. He has established them forever, for all time; He issued a decree, and it shall not be transgressed. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea-monsters and all [that dwell in] the depths; fire and hail, snow and vapor, stormy wind carrying out His command; the mountains and all hills, fruit-bearing trees and all cedars; the beasts and all cattle, creeping things and winged fowl; kings of the earth and all nations, rulers and all judges of the land; young men as well as maidens, elders with young lads. Let them praise the Name of the Lord, for His Name is sublime, to Himself; its radiance [alone] is upon earth and heaven. He shall raise the glory of His people, [increase] the praise of all His pious ones, the Children of Israel, the people close to Him. Praise the Lord!

Chapter 119
Recite now the stanzas from Psalm 119 that correspond to the letters of the ill individual’s Jewish name(s). (Psalm 119 is an acrostic containing twenty-two stanzas, each stanza consisting of eight verses that begin with the same letter from the Hebrew alphabet. The first eight verses all start with the letter aleph, the next eight begin with bet, the next eight with gimel, etc.) E.g., if the person’s name is Moshe (משה), recite the stanzas that begin with mem, shin, and hey. If the person’s name is Rachel (רחל), recite the stanzas that begin with resh, chet and lamed. (If you need help determining the Hebrew spelling of a specific name, drop a line to our Ask the Rabbi personnel.) Then recite the six stanzas that correspond to the words קרע שטן (“destroy the Prosecutor”): kuf, resh, ayin, shin, tet, and nun.
Aleph:
Fortunate are those whose way is artless, who walk with the Torah of the Lord. Fortunate are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with all their hearts. Indeed, they have not done iniquity; they walk in His ways. You have commanded Your precepts to be observed diligently. My wish is that my ways be directed to keep Your statutes. Then I will not be ashamed, when I behold all Your commandments. I will give thanks to You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments. I will keep Your statutes; do not utterly forsake me

How can a young man keep his way pure? By observing Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me stray from Your commandments. I have harbored Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Blessed are You, O Lord; teach me Your statutes. With my lips I have declared all the judgments of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as I would with all riches. I will speak of Your precepts, and gaze upon Your ways. I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.

Gimmel:
Deal kindly with Your servant, that I may live to keep Your word. Unveil my eyes, that I may behold wonders from Your Torah. I am a sojourner on earth; do not hide Your commandments from me. My soul is crushed with a longing for Your judgments every moment. You have rebuked the accursed scoffers, those who stray from Your commandments. Remove insult and contempt from me, for I have kept Your testimonies. Though princes sat and spoke against me, Your servant speaks of Your statutes. Indeed, Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counsellors.

My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me in accordance with Your word. I have spoken of my ways, and You answered me; teach me Your statutes. Make me understand the way of Your precepts, and I will speak of Your wonders. My soul drips away out of grief; sustain me according to Your word. Remove from me the way of falsehood, and graciously endow me with Your Torah. I have chosen the way of faith; Your judgments have I laid before me. I held fast to Your testimonies, O Lord; put me not to shame. I will run on the path of Your commandments, for You will broaden my heart.

Hey:
Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I will keep it to the last. Grant me understanding and I will keep Your Torah; I will observe it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of Your commandments, for that is my desire. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to greed. Avert my eyes from seeing vanity; by Your ways give me life. Fulfill for Your servant Your promise, which brings to the fear of You. Remove my shame which I fear, for Your judgments are good. Behold, I have longed for Your precepts; give me life in Your righteousness.

Vav:
And let Your kindness come to fruition for me, O Lord, Your salvation as You promised. I will offer a retort to those who taunt me, for I trust in Your word. Do not at all remove the word of truth from my mouth, for I hope [to fulfill] Your judgments. I will keep Your Torah continually, for ever and ever. And I will walk in spacious paths, for I seek Your precepts. I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, and I will not be ashamed. And I will delight in Your commandments, which I love. I will lift up my hands to Your commandments, which I love, and I will speak of Your statutes.

Zayin:
Remember the word [promised] to Your servant, by which You gave me hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life. [Though] the wicked ridicule me severely, I have not strayed from Your Torah. When I remember Your judgments of old, O Lord, I take comfort. Trembling seized me because of the wicked, those who forsake Your Torah. Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my wanderings. At night I remembered Your Name, O Lord, and I kept Your Torah. All this came to me because I kept Your precepts.

Chet:
The Lord is my portion; I pledged to keep Your words. I pleaded before You with all my heart: have compassion upon me according to Your word. I contemplated my ways, and returned my feet to Your testimonies. I hurried and did not delay to keep Your commandments. Bands of wicked men plundered me, [but] I did not forget Your Torah. At midnight, I rise to thank You for Your righteous judgments. I am a friend to all who fear You, and to those who keep Your precepts. Your kindness, O Lord, fills the earth; teach me Your statutes.

Tet:
You have dealt goodness to Your servant, O Lord, in accord with Your promise. Teach me the goodness and wisdom of the [Torah’s] reasons, for I believe in Your commandments. Before I afflicted myself, I would blunder; but now I observe Your word. You are good and benevolent; teach me Your statutes. The wicked have smeared me with lies, [when in truth] I keep Your precepts with all my heart. Their hearts grew thick as fat; but as for me, Your Torah is my delight. It is for my good that I was afflicted, so that I might learn Your statutes. The Torah of Your mouth is better for me than thousands in gold and silver.

Yud:
Your hands have made me and prepared me; grant me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments. Those who fear You will see me and rejoice, because I hoped in Your word. I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are just; righteously have You afflicted me. Let Your kindness be my comfort, as You promised to Your servant. Let Your mercies come upon me, that I may live, for Your Torah is my delight. Let the scoffers be shamed, for they have maligned me with falsehood; but I will meditate upon Your precepts. May those who fear You return to me, and those who know Your testimonies. May my heart be perfect in Your statutes, so that I not be shamed.

Chaf:
My soul longs for Your salvation; I hope for Your word. My eyes long for Your promise, saying, “When will You comfort me?” Though I became [dried out] like a wineskin in smoke, I did not forget Your statutes. How many are the days of Your servant? When will You execute judgment upon my pursuers? The wicked have dug pits for me, in violation of Your Torah. All Your commandments teach truth, [yet] they pursue me with lies, help me! They nearly consumed me upon the earth, but I did not forsake Your precepts. As befits Your kindness, grant me life, and I will keep the testimony of Your mouth.

Lamed:
Forever, O Lord, Your word stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness persists for all generations; You established the earth, and it stands. They stand ready today [to execute] Your judgments, for all are Your servants. Had Your Torah not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. Never will I forget Your precepts, for through them You have sustained me. I am Yours; save me, for I have sought Your precepts. The wicked hope to destroy me, but I meditate upon Your testimonies. To every goal I have seen a limit, but Your commandment is immensely broad.

Mem:
O how I love Your Torah! All day it is my discussion. Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. From all my teachers I have gained wisdom, for Your testimonies are my discussion. I will be more perceptive than elders, because I have guarded Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil path, that I might keep Your word. I have not turned away from Your judgments, for You have instructed me. How sweet are Your words to my palate, [sweeter] than honey to my mouth! From Your precepts I gain understanding, therefore I hate every path of falsehood.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn-and I will fulfill it-to keep Your righteous judgments. I am afflicted to the extreme; grant me life, O Lord, according to Your promise. Accept with favor, O Lord, the offerings of my lips, and teach me Your laws. My soul is in danger always, yet I have not forgotten Your Torah. The wicked laid a snare for me, yet I have not strayed from Your precepts. I have taken Your testimonies as an eternal heritage, for they are the joy of my heart. I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes, forever, to the last.

Samech:
I despise vain thoughts, but I love Your Torah. You are my refuge and my shield; I place hope in Your promise. Turn away from me, you evildoers, and I will keep the commandments of my God. Support me according to Your promise, and I will live; let me not be shamed because of my hope. Sustain me, and I will be saved, and I will be engrossed in Your statutes always. You trample all who stray from Your statutes, for their ploy is a lie. You have purged all the wicked of the earth like dross, therefore I love Your testimonies. My flesh bristles from fear of You, and I am in awe of Your judgments.

I practiced justice and righteousness; leave me not to my oppressors. Guarantee Your servant goodness; let not the wicked exploit me. My eyes long for Your salvation, and for the word of Your righteousness. Treat Your servant according to Your kindness, and teach me Your statutes. I am Your servant; grant me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies. It is time to act for the Lord; they have abrogated Your Torah. Therefore I love Your commandments more than gold, even fine gold. Therefore I affirmed all Your precepts; I have hated every path of falsehood.

Your testimonies are wondrous, therefore does my soul guard them. Your opening words illuminate, enlightening the simple. I opened my mouth and swallowed, because I craved Your commandments. Turn to me and favor me, as is [Your] law for those who love Your Name. Set my steps in Your word, and let no iniquity rule over me. Deliver me from the oppression of man, and I will keep Your precepts. Let Your face shine upon Your servant, and teach me Your statutes. My eyes shed streams of water, because they do not keep Your Torah.

Righteous are you, O Lord, and Your judgments are upright. You commanded Your testimonies in righteousness and great faithfulness. My zeal consumes me, because my enemies have forgotten Your words. Your word is very pure, and Your servant cherishes it. I am young and despised, yet I do not forget Your precepts. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your Torah is truth. Trouble and anguish have taken hold of me, yet Your commandments are my delight. Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding, that I may live.

My eyes preceded the night watches, that I may discuss Your word. Hear my voice in keeping with Your kindness; O Lord, grant me life as is Your practice. Those who pursue mischief draw near; they are far from Your Torah. You are near, O Lord, and all Your commandments are truth.
